Savage Cup 2012

March 22, Game One Recap

Andy Welsh scored once and added an assist to lead the Powell River Regals to a 4-2 victory over five-time defending champion Fort St. John Flyers in game one of the BC Savage Cup final at Hap Parker arena in Powell River. Rick McLaren, Scott Kirton and Chris Tarr also scored for the home team while goaltender Justin Mulholland turned away 21 shots en route to a one game lead in the best-of-five series.

Ian Munro opened the scoring for the Flyers, giving the visitors the 1-0 lead they held after 20 minutes. After three unanswered second period goals by the Regals, Flyers defenseman Luke Middleton scored to make it a one-goal game five minutes into the third but Tarr’s shorthanded, unassisted marker midway through the period put the game out of reach.

In other senior AAA playoff action across Canada, South East Prairie Thunder booked their ticket to Allan Cup 2012 with a 6-3 win over Manitoba Lightning. South East took the best-of-seven Manitoba provincial championship in four straight games to join Lloydminster, Saskatchewan (host), and Grand Falls, Newfoundland (Atlantic) in the six-team national championship scheduled to run from April 16-21.

Elsewhere, Balgonie Bisons jumped out to a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-five Saskatchewan final with a 4-1 win over the Rosetown Red Wings. The series continues with game four on Saturday, March 24 and game five, if necessary, on Thursday, March 29. The winner qualifies for Allan Cup 2012.
